Earn a Degree Online and Outsmart the Recession

Each month, federal economic advisors release unemployment figures that are increasingly gloomy. Businesses nationwide are filing for bankruptcy or announcing drastic job and production cutbacks. As jobs grow increasingly scarce, many employees are finding creative ways to cope with employment challenges. Some professionals are going back to school and working to advance their careers through distance learning degree programs.

Others, however, are taking an entirely new approach to meeting these economic challenges. They are cross-training to increase their job skills and maximize their potential for finding a job. Although few businesses in healthcare have actually cut jobs yet, many are freezing hiring or hiring people for bedside care positions only. Therefore, many healthcare workers are taking business or technology courses to increase their earnings potential and safeguard their jobs.
For example, nurse managers may decide to earn a degree in business or a management-related field to increase their value to the healthcare organization. Likewise, nursing assistants may decide to train as secretaries to make their skills more flexible, while secretaries may decide to try on the nursing assistant role as well. Some bedside nurses are taking courses in technology or computer networking to increase their job opportunities and add skills to their resume.

People currently working in business-related fields are also enrolling in online degree programs to cross-train and increase their employment flexibility. Many business managers are enrolling in distance learning courses that teach computer networking, web design, or network security. Internet technology is the future of business, and most companies no longer are interested in employees or managers who are not willing to keep up with changes in technology.

Cross-training benefits the company as well as workers, because more people are available to do a job. This decreases the negative impact of employee absence, retirement, or job changes. Because of this, many business corporations are offering to cross-train workers at their own expense, or allow them to enroll in traditional or accredited online university degree programs to gain these skills.

If you're concerned about your job, don't just sit back in the corner and hope that you will be safe from the cutbacks around you. Update your resume, stay up-to-date on your skills, and take advantage of any cross-training options your employer offers. If your company offers to pay for online degree university courses, take advantage of the opportunity. Enhance your skills at home, and keep your job future as secure as you can. The stronger your skills are the better chance your career has of surviving these tough economic times.
